Rosa Parks Birth Anniversary

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

rosaparks_mlk_background.jpg

Guess what! Today’s Rosa Parks Birthday! For people who don’t know, Rosa Louise McCauley Parks lived from February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005 and was an African American civil rights activist whom the U.S. Congress later called the “Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement”.

Montgomery, Alabama December 1, 1955 was the time, setting, and era where African Americans were obligated by law to ride in the back of the bus and Rosa refused to fork over her seat to a white man during a ride home from work. As a result of her actions, Rosa was arrested and found guilty of disorderly conduct and fined $14.00. This simple act sparked the modern civil rights movement.

If you look at the photo above, Martin Lurther King Jr. is in the background.
